I bought 3 of Willie's books a little while back. I eagerly opened The Tao of Willie and sat back to learn fine Texas wisdom, to hear his drawl ~ to be enlightened. I enjoyed it, learned a bit but it didn't fit into that Willie expectation that I was hoping for. The second one was much the same as the first so when I finished it, I waited a while to read this, the longest one. This gem was exactly what I was hoping for. It was still replete with little asides that he might murmur in a concert but they weren't peppered in each paragraph. His love of Sister Bobbie, his honesty with his former wives, his respect and his simple way of thinking that makes perfect sense was the Tao of Willie. I loved this. I love his love.

First off let me say I’m not a fan of Willies’ politics, that aside this is a wonderful book. To paraphrase Frank Sinatra, “Willie did it his way!” And at times it might not have looked like the right way as the Nashville, execs would say, but it was his way and I’d say it’s been the correct way.
He grew up in the little town of Abbot, Tx and never, ever forgot his roots, his family or his friends. How many of us can say that? I can probably count them on two, maybe three fingers. We get caught up in everyday life and forget our passions and our dreams. Willie came close to this a couple of times when he had to take an assortment of odd jobs to help support his family. Many times he succeeded and many times he failed. From selling encyclopedias to vacuum cleaners he was on the hustle. If it weren’t for his first wife Marth, I doubt if the world would have known his music as we do today. Her ability to always find a job waitressing kept the lights on, some food on the table and a place for him rest his bones, that is, when he came home.
Was his rise to stardom easy? Hell no. Was it painful? Did it take a toll on his family life? Absolutely. But despite set-backs and heartaches he never blamed anyone but himself for how his life was moving forward or backward. Did he marry several times and fail? Yes. But he never felt angst for his exe’s. He understood he was a difficult man to live with. Did the failed marriages affect relationships with his children? No. Because he was a family man through and through and wished all of them best in the world. His biggest thrill wasn’t playing with Waylon, Kris, Johnny, Bonnie, Dolly, Ray or Merle, it was with his kids and his sister. How many of us have wished we could stay close with our kids and not only pass on our talents and gifts but also share with them in the spotlight? That to me is his greatest accomplishment to date and I think he would agree.
An even stronger message is stay true to your roots. No matter how much money he made or lost, no matter how many homes he had, he never forgot where he came from to the point he bought the Old Methodist Church and his Doctor’s house in Abbot. He did it to keep his past in the present and the present in the past. What an excellent tribute to growing up in small town America.
I could go on praising his accolades and accomplishment but I believe that not be in staying with the truth. .
When you read this biography, you’ll get the feeling he’s sitting right across from you; a joint in one hand and trigger (guitar) in the other composing another hit while still carrying on a good conversation.
Who will like this? Anyone who wants to enjoy a down-to-earth yarn about one the most successful musicians or our time.
Four and-a-half stars
Can't put it down...Reading Willie's book is like hearing him talking to me in my head. There's not one boring word or passage - in fact, there are so many memorable words coming out of Willie's heart and soul in this book, that I'm going to be quoting him for the rest of my days. And of course, his songs float through the book, the melodies and sound of his voice filling my mind as well. I especially love when he was telling about writing some particular songs, and the lyrics just flow through the pages, and I could hear him singing those lyrics. That was so inspiring that I found myself singing his lyrics...and you know, it feels good to feel close to Willie Nelson through his words. I remember when my parents were freaking out in the 60s because this guy with unconventional clothes and long braids was daring to emerge on the music scene. But we all fell in love with him, and we still do love him today, you know. His book is about everything his songs are about, which is about everything his life is about. We are so fortunate to have this gift...
This book had almost no surprises. Having grown up with the music of Willie Nelson, my impressions of him, about his life, his lifestyle, and his music were formed by what I heard and saw. He confirmed all my beliefs and impressions of him in this book. No surprises.
He champions marijuana. No surprises. He has had tumultuous personal relationships and marriages. No surprises. It is evident through his music that there is an overall sense of sadness and depression in his life. It might seem strange to note his claims that he is overall optimistic, but that also makes sense. His early career was marked by refusals of producers to support his musical style and choices. To meet these refusals with continued efforts to find musical outlets while at the same time supporting himself by working at distinctly non-musical jobs, such as a door-to-door salesman for various products indicates optimism and self-confidence.
His musical style, the storytelling style, is the story. As he details country music legends who influenced him, the reader can see that Nelson is a great synthesizer, combining all the styles he loves and adding his personal twist. That is one part of the story. Then there is the financial part with his battle at the IRS. A third story is his role as a songwriter for so many others, a role that led to many friendships such as when he wrote “Crazy” for Patsy Cline. Finally there is the story of a man with a strong sense of faith, a fair and honest man who never the less leads an exuberant bad boy lifestyle.
There are no spoilers, no surprises, this is just a pleasant read that affirms what many knew about this great singer and songwriter.
